Hi, I'm Karen Leslie – your friendly WordPress Fairy Godmother.✨
I want to start by saying something that a lot of people in the web world won't tell you:
If you don't "get" WordPress, it's not your fault.
Honestly. Most people are handed their shiny new website with a wave and a "good luck!"
No training. No guide. No "here's how not to accidentally break it."
Let's change that, shall we?
Why You Feel Lost With WordPress
Here's the thing: your web designer probably isn't a teacher.
They're likely a creative genius who makes beautiful things. They want to create, not train.
And that's fair enough — they're brilliant in their zone. But that leaves you, the business owner, staring at a dashboard thinking,
"What in the name of plugins is this??"
When I first built websites, I used to offer an hour of training after launch. Just a quick run-through. But guess what?
That wasn't enough. Knowing how to log in is not the same as knowing how to keep your website running like a dream. You don't need to know everything about WordPress. But you do need to know a few really important bits.
What You Actually Need to Know
Let's break it down — no tech jargon, no judgment.
🔄 Updates Don't Do Themselves (Sorry)
Unless you're on a managed plan (like the ones I offer), your website isn't updating itself in the background while you sip your tea. Even some "managed" hosting providers only update the WordPress core, not your plugins or themes.
That's like fixing the roof and ignoring the leaking pipes.
Things go out of sync, stuff breaks, and suddenly, your lovely website is glitchy and slow, or worse, offline.
🖼️ Images Can Make or Break Your Site
Most of us use our phones for photos. Quick snap, looks fab, upload it straight to WordPress, job done... right?
Not quite.
Phone pics are HUGE. Uploading them as-is will slow your site down to a snails pace.
Here's what to do instead:
- Resize the image (you don't need billboard-size photos).
- Rename it (ditch "IMG_4856.jpg" – use something descriptive).
- Strip out the extra camera data (you won't miss it).
- Add proper alt text – not for SEO stuffing, but for real people using screen readers and for Google.
Alt text is like describing your photo to someone who can't see it. "Smiling woman with laptop" is much more helpful than "image1.jpg".
🧠 Your Website Should Sound Like You
If your website sounds stiff and corporate but you're actually warm, fun, and a little cheeky, that's a disconnect. Your clients feel it, and you feel it. It just doesn't fit.
The same goes for images. One woman came to me for a free audit and said she worked exclusively with women. Lovely! Except… all her website photos? Full of men. Not a single woman on there alone.
That doesn't mean her business is broken—it just means her branding and messaging need a little tweak to match her.
So... What Can You Do?
If your website is feeling a bit off—maybe slow, maybe confusing, maybe just not you—don't panic.
Here's how I can help:
💬 One Free Call (Yes, Just One Per Client – We've All Got Bills)
Let's have a proper chat. No sales pitch. Just an honest look at what's going on and what could help.
🔍 Website Audit
Think of it as a health check for your website. I'll look behind the scenes to see what's working (and what's not) and determine what needs tweaking.
🛠️ Coming Soon: Fit for Success (FFS)
This is the big one—an audit covering 40 key areas on your website—everything from security and speed to visuals and user-friendliness. It's not live yet, but it's on the way.
This will help if you want your website to be the best version of itself and actually work for your business. Let me know if you want to be one of the first to use this service.
Final Thoughts (And a Bit of Tough Love)
If someone tells you to just "upgrade your hosting" and spend more money on it, take a breath. That might help. But often, it's not the server—it's the setup.
Sometimes all you need is a bit of tweaking, a bit of clarity, and someone who can actually explain it all without making you feel like a numpty.
That's where I come in.
You weren't taught WordPress.
You don't need to feel bad about that.
I've spent 15+ years in the world of WordPress, and I still don't know everything—no one does. But I do know how to help you make your website easier and faster for you and your clients.
So if you're staring at your site thinking, "This could be better…" You're right.
Let's have a chat.
I promise it won't be scary.
