Is Your Website Working for Your Business?

Think back to when you first created your website. What was driving that decision? Credibility? Lead generation? Sales? The need to look "professional"?

Here's what I've discovered after years of helping businesses with their WordPress sites: most websites aren't working nearly hard enough for their owners. They're digital business cards when they should be 24/7 sales machines.

The Problem: Websites That Don't Convert

Your website should be your most tireless employee—working around the clock to attract visitors, build trust, and convert prospects into clients. Yet too many business websites are doing the bare minimum, leaving money on the table every single day.

I see this constantly in my work as the "WordPress fairy godmother" (yes, that's really what my clients call me). Business owners invest in beautiful designs but miss the fundamental elements that drive results.

The Two-Lens Website Audit

I recommend evaluating your website through two critical perspectives:

Lens #1: Your Visitor's Experience

When someone lands on your homepage, what do they see within the first 3 seconds? Can they immediately understand:

  • Who you are
  • What problem you solve
  • Why they should choose you over competitors

Lens #2: Your Business Goals

Step back and ask yourself:

  • What do I want my website to accomplish?
  • Is it delivering those results?
  • Where are the gaps between intention and reality?

The "Face Behind the Business" Problem

Here's a personal frustration: I visit countless business websites that feel anonymous. No photos, no names, sometimes not even a proper "About" page. It's 2025—people want to know who they're potentially working with.

This is especially crucial if you're a solo entrepreneur or the face of your business. Your prospects have likely seen you on social media, in Facebook groups, or on TikTok or wherever you hang out online. When they visit your website, they need that immediate recognition: "Yes, I'm in the right place."

Confession time: I'm guilty of this myself. Despite being known as the "WordPress fairy godmother," that phrase doesn't appear prominently on my homepage. I discovered this gap while preparing for my own rebrand, and it was a wake-up call about practicing what I preach.

Common Website Gaps That Kill Conversions

These "gaps" are where you lose potential clients:

The Identity Gap: Visitors can't quickly identify who you are or what you do
The Trust Gap: No clear credentials, testimonials, or proof of expertise
The Action Gap: Unclear next steps or weak calls-to-action
The Connection Gap: No way for visitors to easily get in touch or learn more

The Solution: Strategic Gap-Filling

Fixing these issues doesn't require a complete website overhaul. Sometimes it's as simple as:

  • Adding your photo to the homepage
  • Writing clear, benefit-focused headlines
  • Including client testimonials prominently
  • Making your contact information easy to find
  • Ensuring your unique value proposition is obvious

Remember: You are the best person to represent your business. I know being "front and centre" feels uncomfortable—trust me, I struggle with this too. But your expertise and personality are what set you apart from competitors.

Your Website Evolution

Your business evolves, and your website should too. The goals you had when you first launched may no longer match your current needs. That's normal and healthy.

I'm currently going through this myself, transitioning from hiding behind a business name to being authentically me. It's scary but necessary for where my business is heading.

Taking Action

Look at your website right now—not as the business owner who knows every detail, but as a first-time visitor. What story does it tell? What action does it inspire?

If you're seeing gaps, don't panic. These are simply opportunities to optimize. Whether you tackle them yourself or work with someone like me through a WordPress Tweaks and Fixes (WTF) session, the important thing is acknowledging that your website should be working harder for your business.

After all, it's there 24/7 even when you're not. Shouldn't it be earning its keep?
