Three reasons your website is not generating leads

If your website wasn’t built to bring you leads then maybe you can skip this blog post. Why do I say maybe? Because maybe (there’s that word again) it’s because you weren’t asked what your website could be doing for your business. It’s a case of you don’t know what you don’t know when it comes to your own website.

If you would like your website to be bringing in leads then keep reading.

In my reviews of WordPress websites, here are the main reasons I see why websites are not generating leads.

Web visitors don't know what to do next

You either had a lot of say in your website or you designed it yourself. You know what visitors are meant to do on your website. It’s obvious isn’t it? Not necessarily.

An example on one website I’ve seen is that the logout leaving symbol is also where you log into the website. When I first arrived on this website, ready to log in, I had to scan the website. In my head I was running through all the different places a login could be - top of the page, footer. Although I saw an exit symbol at the top right hand corner, but that was an exit icon and I was trying to log in. After exhausting all the other options I could think of, I clicked on the exit icon, for the login screen to appear.

For me that was a bad customer experience. If I hadn’t needed to login into that website for a client, I would have given up and gone elsewhere.

We humans have many things going on in our head, so when designing and strategising for a website it has to be easy for us. It also needs to work on a mobile, and by work I mean be seen, be clear and obvious.

Some of the hover over boxes where text is hidden behind an image, relies on someone moving their mouse over that part of the screen. On a mobile we don’t use a mouse so something has to tell us to do the same thing otherwise we’ll miss important details.

Do you get me?

When a visitor lands on your website this is what they want to know. Do you get them? Do you understand their fears, doubts, issues? Can you help them with solutions?

I’ve reviewed websites where it all starts off with your credentials and bio. Yes, you're an amazing human, great at what you do, but first your visitor needs to be seen. They need to know that they’re in the right place.

If they don’t think that you get them, understand them and can help them, they’ll move on. Quickly.

Small niggles add up to doubt

You may look at your website and think but it’s not that bad. It may not be bad but is it good?

Small little things, added together, can lead to doubt in not only your website but in you.

Years ago my business was called Mount Gambier Website Design, and I had one visitor contact me to say she could never work with me due to a typo on a page. I was stunned that she’d contacted me to tell me. I found the typo and corrected it. This was in the days before you could get Grammarly or AI to check everything for you.

It bugged me for ages, because I was annoyed that I’d missed me. Yes, that’s my perfectionist side coming out.

Now we not only have to check typo’s, there’s also slow load times will cause people to leave, failing contact forms (what’s worse is a contact form that says it’s been sent and then gets lost), outdated info or outdated images.

All these little friction points can cause doubt. We want your web visitors to know, like and trust you, not doubt you.
